In this project, I wanted to challenge myself to combine detailed illustrations with intricate type. I hand-lettered the magazine title, article title as well as a drop cap. I focused on the contrast between the type and illustration for legibility but kept the brushes and patterns consistent for cohesion. I used a gritty texture to break up the large and bold nature of the plants.
For the cover, I kept it simple with one central image and minimal text, as this magazine tends to do. I re-created the magazine header in the same style as the lettering that I created for the feature article.
In order to keep the illustration and type from becoming overwhelming, I picked a muted color to balance them out. Simple body copy keeps the focus on the illustration and keeps it easy to read.
